What a day.
This week is VBS week at school. He's been having a lot of fun with all the extra festivities and I figured this would've been a super easy week at drop off. Not so much . . .
When we got there today he washed his hands, signed in and then we were doing our routine "hug, kiss, high five" when all the kids were lining up to go outside to the bouncy houses. He was only half paying attention after "hug and kiss" that he wasn't doing the high five and so after a few reminders and no response i told him bye and to get in line to go play. He completely broke down and insisted we do it all again. I pulled him aside to get out of the way of the group and to talkwith him to explain that I had to go to work and I'd be back after nap to get him (and to also go through the "hug, kiss, high five routine). There is a sofa out in the hallway that we go to for talks, so that's where I took him this time too. After talking and routine stuff he said he wanted to go back to the classroom to do it again. We walked back to his room to do the "hug, kiss and high five" and he kept wiping his eyes to dry his tears. He was really having a hard time clearing up. He said, "Mommy, my tears aren't drying up will you try?" (Yes, this broke my heart). We got a tissue to wipe his eyes and that seemed to work a bit better. He was feeling a lot better after this and I believe he even skipped a little on the way out to the bouncy houses. I thought we were all good and then we reached the destination. He wouldn't let go of my hand and begged me to stay and watch him play. (He lost it again.) Once again I explained that I couldn't but that I would stay to watch him go through one slide but he had to let me go after that. He finally agreed and went through and then he went back on his word. I finally had to walk (pull) him to a teacher to let them help. I had to just pull myself away and not look back. A totally terrible morning.
I cried all the way to work. I haven't dealt with this in a long time. The first 3 years were like this and I've enjoyed him getting out of that over the past year or so. These days are so hard! Jeff ended up picking him up from school and then texted me this:
"buddy, mommy said you were a little upset this morning when she left and that you cried. what upset you and made you cry?
because I love her!"
Then I cried all the way home. It's amazing how much emotion can come out of having him.
